【What Is DVS?】

DVS stands for Digital Vinyl System. It is a DJ system that allows users to control digital audio files stored on a computer by using a turntable and timecode vinyl.

Timecode vinyl does not contain recorded music. Instead, it contains a continuous timecode signal that communicates playback speed, direction, and stylus position.

DVS software such as Serato DJ Pro, Traktor Pro, and rekordbox DJ analyzes this timecode signal and reflects the turntable’s movements onto digital audio in real time.

Because DVS relies on the accurate reproduction of the timecode signal, unstable tracking can lead to dropouts, latency, or malfunction, significantly affecting performance. While the appearance and hands-on feel remain identical to traditional analog DJing, the actual sound being played comes from digital audio files on a computer

How DVS Works

  1. Timecode Vinyl Playback
The stylus reads the timecode signal from the vinyl.

  1. Signal Transmission
The signal is sent to a computer via a DVS-compatible mixer or audio interface.

  1. Signal Analysis
DJ software detects playback speed, direction, and stylus position.

  1. Digital Control
The analyzed data controls scratching, cueing, looping, pitch adjustment, and other functions within the digital audio file.

Why a Dedicated DVS Stylus Matters

Conventional DJ styli are designed to trace music grooves,

not to reproduce timecode signals with the precision DVS requires.

DVS performance assumes intense techniques such as cueing, back-spins, and scratching. These place significantly greater physical stress on the stylus than standard playback. If the timecode signal becomes unstable, dropouts, latency, and inconsistent response may occur.

A stylus designed specifically for DVS must deliver:

  • Stable tracking during aggressive performance
  • Clear and consistent timecode signal reproduction
  • Precise response to scratching and jog movements

Durability for extended use

【Development Background】

While developing the SKRATCH 101 and SKRATCH 101-40 with ruby tips, JICO discovered a key advantage during DVS testing:

Ruby produced an exceptionally clean and precise circular trace on the DVS calibration scope, indicating highly stable timecode reading.

This led to the decision to develop a stylus specifically designed for DVS and timecode vinyl, with enhancements beyond the SKRATCH 101 and SKRATCH 101-40 models, including:

  • High-Stability Compliance Suspension damper rubber, designed and tuned exclusively for timecode vinyl to maintain stable tracking and consistent timecode signal reproduction during intense DVS performance
  • Enhanced tip diameter and conical shape for cleaner timecode tracking and improved signal accuracy
  • Improved stability under aggressive DJ techniques, including backspins, scratching, and rapid cueing

To validate this concept, JICO conducted:

  • Extensive internal durability and performance tests
  • Real-world evaluation with multiple DJs
  • Repeated prototyping and refinement

Our goal is to provide a high-quality DVS stylus at an accessible price, supporting the growing number of DJs who rely on DVS timecode vinyl systems.

【Product Specifications】

  • Compatible Cartridges:
    M44G / M44-7 / J44D / J44A 7 / J50 / IMPACT / ALFA MODEL / GENRE BNDR MODEL / Clipper
  • Tip Material: Solid Natural Ruby
  • Tip Shape: Conical
  • Tip Diameter: φ0.4mm
  • Cantilever: Aluminum (JICO Type S)
  • Damper Rubber: High-Stability Compliance Suspension
  • Frequency Response: 20Hz–20kHz
  • Output Voltage:0mV–8.0mV

Tracking Force: 3.5g–4.5

Thanks to the hardness and durability of ruby, the stylus maintains stable timecode tracking and signal accuracy even during aggressive DVS performances. Back-spins and scratching are handled with minimal signal disruption, ensuring reliable and responsive control.
